WASHINGTON HEIGTHS:

REFLECTORS - RECEPTORS

Existing physical conditions:

The site is located between 178th st and 179th street intersecting Broadway, ST Nicholas av. and 2 subway lines, where the only interstate highway crossing Manhattan in east west direction, a bus terminal and four 32 stories towers are
located. Being important physical connectors all of them have a REGIONAL SCALE.

Existing activities:

There is a constant trade process between the Dominican community living in Washington Heights and their homeland which creates a GLOBAL SCALE net of connections.
This movement generates a LOCAL SCALE system of interchange points, divided in:

Reflectors:

mailing and telephone centers, traveling agencies, etc.

Receptors:

Dominican food markets, Latin music and religious stores, etc.

STRATEGY

Using the Reflectors-Receptors system as a code to understand the existing activities and physical conditions in the site and using it as a tool to create relations between different scales.
To reinforce the community identity to integrate this isolated area to the rest of Manhattan, creating a Dominican and Latin center of activities.
