BOUNDARY, the presence of the edge.
The controlling codes of Morningside Heights are topography, building typology, landmarks and the edge. There exists not only a physical boundary, but also a secondary institutional boundary that extends from Broadway to Amsterdam and from 110th to 122th st.
Strategies
1.NODE, a multipurpose twin tower on the corner Broadway and 110th street.
2.OPEN SPACE, the park on St. John's Cathedral creates a special place for residence to visit and relax.
3.LANDMARK, a structure on the spot where the subway reaches the ground level, 122th st.
4.LINKAGE, a dormitory building extends to the western edge of the district and links from inside to outside.
DE-FRAMING, heterogeneous space as series of connections.
The goal is to connect Morningside Heights to Central Harlem through Morningside Park. The idea is to create heterogeneous space by de-framing the whole context of the site. The park shifts into the city and the city comes into the park, city-park and park-city overlay. A new internal-external relation between elements inside and outside the frame is created.
The hard boundary of Morningside Park is given new meaning through transformation to an in-between space of new monument and activities.

TRANSISTOR SPACE, for virtual and physical connections. TOPOGRAPHY, irresistible linkage within the city.
TRANSISTOR SPACE, for virtual and physical connections.
Morningside Heights is an area dominated by Columbia University.
To analyze the existing relation between the campus and the community I have taken the microchip as a model: its complexity, multiplicity of operations and grid format make it similar to a city.
So the institution works in a different way at two levels:
physically, as a big box working at local scale,
virtually, as a network, multilevel of communication working at local, regional and global scale.
The proposal expansion for the University is focused on the space in between the artificial University platform and the natural topography of the hill by breaking the surrounding wall of the University. The new space is TRANSISTOR SPACE between the University and the Community.
TOPOGRAPHY, irresistible linkage within the city.
Morningside Heights is characterized by its topography. The area is standing on a hill located between Morningside and Riverside Parks.
In order to accommodate, Columbia University planned to expand and to support growth and density the area. Open space is organized along new strong EAST-WEST connections between the two parks: 120th st, 116th st and 110th st. Campus satellites integrate community university
