East Harlem: Rhythm within the Grid

Movements along the street,

and through blocks,

are defined by a variety of surfaces

that people interact with.

Facades, walls, fences, roofs, sidewalks, ledges.

Surfaces where people sit, walk, play,

penetrate, change levels, turn corners,

and use creatively.

Surfaces broken rhythmically,

allow for a hierachy of open spaces,

creating a change of beat.

Open spaces

Centers of activity uniting buildings;

places of refuge from the busy street

connecting buildings to streets;

entrances to paths through blocks

connecting streets.

For there to be rhythm in the street,

there must be rhythm in the block.

Changing scales, lots of different sizes.

Mixed uses, many activities.

As activities change, surfaces change,

and the rhythm within the grid

continues.
