Degree Requirements

Residence: Two Residence Units.

Courses: Ten courses (30 points) must be earned in G4000-level courses or above.  At least six courses must be taken for a letter grade.  Of these, at least 9 points (three courses) must be taken for a letter grade in Philosophy courses, and at least 9 points (three courses) must be taken for a letter grade in Physics courses in each of the three main areas of the foundations of physics, namely relativity, quantum mechanics, and thermodynamics.  The remaining 12 points may be taken for R credit.  Students can satisfy the program's course requirements by choosing from offerings in philosophy and physics.

Language: None.

Thesis: A written master's thesis that presents original research on some aspect of the foundations of philosophy of physics, to be completed under the supervision of a member of the Physics or Philosophy departments.  The thesis must be defended before a committee consisting of the supervisor and two faculty members (one from the Philosophy Department and one from the Physics Department).
