Change of Department

A student who is currently registered in a program at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences may apply for a change of department or program by completing the proper form and submitting a detailed description of the reason for the change.

Students may request a change:

  • from one PhD program to another PhD program
  • from a PhD program to a Free-Standing Master’s program
  • from one Fee-Standing Master’s program to another.

NOTE: A change of department or program is not allowed from a Free-Standing Master’s program to a PhD program. You may not use a change of department or program form to apply to another division or school of the University; a formal application for admission to the intended school is required.

Change of department requests cannot be made within the first semester of enrollment.

Approval for such requests is solely at the discretion of the faculty of the department or program to which you are applying and the deans.

Once the request is approved, you are considered to be a student in the new department or program. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you consider thoroughly requesting a change of department or program.
