Doctoral students conduct research and write a dissertation constituting an original contribution to knowledge. During the course of their studies, doctoral students receive the M.A. (sequential M.A.) and the M.Phil. degrees. Study for the Ph.D. is full-time only and students may take up to seven years to complete the degree or six years if admitted with advanced standing.

Students whose credentials for admission are received by the appropriate deadline and who have indicated that they wish to be considered for fellowship will be reviewed for admission and fellowship concurrently. Complete applications must be received by the programs admissions deadline for the fall semester. All applicants are urged strongly to apply well in advance of the deadline.
