Students may also pursue the M.A. as a degree objective in
itself (the Free-standing Master’s). Free-standing M.A. programs are designed
for students who: (1) are eager for intellectual enrichment; (2) may wish to
apply later to a Ph.D. program; (3) may wish to prepare for a specific career;
(4) are international students interested in completing a year of courses and
the M.A. degree before returning to their country or seeking employment in the
U.S. Free-standing M.A. programs are listed in the Academic Programs.
Study for the Free-standing M.A. may be either part-time or full-time. Most
students complete the M.A. in one or two years, but may take up to four years to
complete the degree unless otherwise specified (please consult the departmental
websites for academic rules and regulations). M.A. students in the Department of
Political Science are required to study full-time. Consult the departmental
sections for information and deadlines.
U.S. citizens
and permanent residents in free-standing M.A. programs are eligible for
financial aid such as loans and work-study. International students should check
with the Financial Aid Office, 107 Low Library, 212-854-3808, regarding
eligibility for financial assistance. Those who will require an F-1 or J-1 visa
must register as full-time students.
