Degree Requirements
For the M.Phil. Degree
Program of study: Successful completion of an approved 30-point program of study beyond the M.S. degree. Specific course requirements are determined in consultation with the program adviser.
Residence Units: Four Residence Units beyond the M.S. degree are required.
Examination: A written qualifying examination covering the core areas and the student’s field of specialization, at the level of first-year graduate courses, is given annually in May. Students are expected to take this examination after one year of residence. An oral examination is also given in the specialized research area.
For the Ph.D. Degree
In addition to fulfilling the M.Phil. degree requirements, the student must submit and successfully defend a dissertation.
English Proficiency Requirement
Admitted Ph.D. students who are required to submit official results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) must attain level 10 on the English Placement Test (EPT) administered by the American Language Program (ALP). International students must take the EPT at the fall orientation.
