The Departments of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics,
Astronomy, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Physics cooperate in offering
a graduate program in atmospheric and planetary science. The program supports
research in terrestrial climate change, atmospheric remote sensing, planetary
atmospheres, and astrobiology. Students enrolled in the Atmospheric and
Planetary Science Program engage in research under the supervision of staff
members at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies. Interested students
should consult an appropriate member of the committee at an early stage of
their graduate careers.
A participant in the Atmospheric and Planetary Science
Program must apply to and be admitted by one of the following participating
departments and must satisfy the requirements of that department: Applied
Physics and Applied Mathematics (Fu Foundation School of Engineering and
Applied Science); Astronomy, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Physics
(Graduate School of Arts and Sciences).
Degree Requirements
For the Ph.D. Degree
The student must meet the Ph.D. requirements set by the department in which he or she is registered. This includes special requirements and qualifying examinations covering subject areas within and outside the student’s area of interest.
The student’s program is arranged in consultation with a member of the Committee on Atmospheric and Planetary Science.
The program should include those courses needed to meet the department’s core requirements and to support the student’s dissertation research.
Financial Aid A comprehensive program of financial aid, including fellowships and appointments in teaching and research, is available to students in their home departments.
