Programs of Study
Research in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics encompasses several related disciplines: Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology.
Areas of particular interest include X-ray diffraction, NMR spectroscopy and other biophysical methods; protein biochemistry of membrane proteins; theoretical studies of macromolecules; prokaryotic and eukaryotic gene organization and expression; biochemical aspects of neurobiology and virology; molecular genetics of eukaryotic development; cell surface receptors; and signal transduction.
Degree Requirements
The requirements listed below are special to this department and must be read in conjunction with the general requirements of the Graduate School. Students are required to pursue a full-time program of study.
For the M.Phil. Degree
Teaching requirement: Participation in instructional activities for a minimum of one year. In the second year of study, students gain exposure to teaching by leading discussion sections and tutorials and grading examinations.
Examination: A written qualifying examination in biochemistry must be taken at the end of the second term.
Residence Units: Six, including the two earned for the M.A.
For the Ph.D. Degree
After completion of all requirements for the M.Phil. degree, a student must prepare a written dissertation embodying original research, approved by his or her sponsors, and must successfully defend the dissertation in an oral examination.
Financial Aid Fellowships and teaching fellowships are available to qualified students. Most students are supported by research assistantships after their first year of study.
