The free-standing M.A. Program in Biotechnology trains students in modern aspects of molecular and cell biology with a particular emphasis on approaches used in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Individuals already working in these areas who would like more advanced training also benefit from earning this degree. The curriculum focuses on the basic principle of biotechnology and specific applications in various fields. The use of biotechnology to fight disease is emphasized.
Degree Requirements
All students must complete four core courses, consisting of
three courses in the classroom and one intensive laboratory course or research
experiment, 15 credits of electives, and a thesis.
M.A. thesis: Includes a review of a topic in biotechnology chosen with the help of a program adviser. Thesis work can also be completed through a research internship within or outside of Columbia under faculty supervision. http://www.columbia.edu/cu/biology/pages/ma-biotech/cur/theses/index.html
Length of Program
Two Residence Units. An intensive one-year (including the summer) program is possible for well-prepared students. A reduced pace is recommended for those who do not have a strong background in molecular biology. Part-time students can complete the program in three to eight semesters.
A complete list of residence, course, and lab requirements and academic standards can be found at http://www.columbia.edu/cu/biology/pages/ma-biotech/cur/hndbk/index.html.
