Department of Chemical Engineering


Degree Programs: Full-Time: M.Phil., Ph.D.

The requirements listed below are special to this department and must be read in conjunction with the general requirements of the Graduate School.

All students in the Ph.D. program must (1) earn satisfactory grades in three core courses (CHEN E4010, CHEN E4110, CHAP E4120); (2) satisfy course requirements beyond the three core courses, including at least 24 points of 4000- or 6000-level courses; (3) pass a qualifying exam; (4) complete at least 30 points of advanced graduate courses beyond the M.S. degree; (5) complete six total Residence Units, including two for the M.S. degree;(6) participate in the instructional and/or research activities of the department for a minimum of one year; (7) defend a proposal of research within twelve months of passing the qualifying exam; (8) prepare, defend and deposit a dissertation embodying original research in accordance with the regulations of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

The M.Phil. degree is granted when all the requirements above are met with the exception of (8) above, pertaining to the dissertation.Preparation and defense of the dissertation is the only requirement for the Ph.D. after requirements for the M.Phil. have been completed.

Program in Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering

For the M.Phil. Degree

Program of study: 30 points of advanced graduate courses beyond the M.S. degree are required.

Residence Units: Four full-time Residence Units beyond the M.S. degree are required.

Teaching requirement: Participation in the instructional and/or research activities of the department for a minimum of one year.

Examination: A written qualifying examination covering the appropriate areas of study must be passed.

Languages: None.

For the Ph.D. Degree

In addition to the requirements for the M.Phil. degree, a dissertation embodying original research must be completed and successfully defended.

Financial Aid

A comprehensive program of financial aid, including fellowships and appointments in teaching and research, is available for students in the Ph.D. degree program.
