Degree Requirements

The requirements listed below are special to this department and must be read in conjunction with the general requirements of the Graduate School.

For the Ph.D. Degree

The requirements consist of (1) a minimum of 30 points of advanced graduate courses beyond the M.S. degree, with a grade point average of at least 3.25; (2) participation in the instructional activities of the department for a minimum of one year; (3) achievement of a passing score on the doctoral qualifying examination; (4) four Residence Units earned at Columbia; and (5) completion and successful defense of a dissertation based on original research.

Length of Program of Study

The Ph.D. program requires a minimum of two years (after the master’s degree), with the average length being three to four years. All degree requirements must be completed within seven years.

Financial Aid

Financial aid in the form of fellowships, scholarships, teaching fellowships, and graduate research assistantships is available to qualified candidates. Awards are made on the basis of merit.
