The Classical Studies program offers an interdisciplinary
approach to the integrated study of Greek and Roman culture as revealed by its
art, literature, and history. The program provides broad and coherent training
in classical studies, crossing traditional departmental barriers and moving
toward a less particularized view of classical antiquity.
Each student follows a carefully designed program in the major fields of
classical studies (i.e., ancient history, archaeology, and classics), leading
to a concentration on topics of research that involve more than one field of
study. Fellowships are awarded to students in the Ph.D. program in recognition
of academic achievement and in expectation of scholarly success. Teaching and
research experience are considered an important aspect of the training of
graduate students. Thus, Ph.D. fellowships include some teaching and research
apprenticeship.
Special Admission Requirements
In addition to the requirements listed below, all students must submit
1 official transcript showing courses and grades per school attended, a
Statement of Academic Purpose, a writing sample ( course paper, term paper, etc.) and 3 letters of evaluation from academic sources. All
international students whose native language is not English or whose
undergraduate degree is from an institution in a country whose official
language is not English, must submit scores of the Test of English as a
Foreign Language (TOEFL) or IELTS. For more information, refer to our Admissions Information and Frequently Asked Questions pages.

Applicants should have
a reading knowledge of Greek and Latin and one modern language (German, French, or Italian); some undergraduate work in classical literature, philosophy, art, or history is desirable. Students interested in taking the Free-Standing M.A. option may be considered for admittance with a background in only one of the ancient languages. Students without an M.A. degree are admitted only for the program beginning in the autumn term. Under special circumstances, students with an M.A. degree from Columbia or another institution may enter in the spring.
