Degree Requirements
The requirements listed below are special to this department and must be read in conjunction with the general requirements of the Graduate School.
For the M.Phil Degree
Program of study: 30 points of advanced graduate courses beyond the M.S. degree are required.
Residence Units: four full-time Residence Units beyond the M.S. degree are required.
Teaching requirement: Participation in the instructional activities of the department for a minimum of one year.
Examinations: A written qualifying examination covering the appropriate areas of study must be passed.
Languages: None.
For the Ph.D. Degree
The Ph.D. degree in Earth and Environmental Engineering is granted under the common program (with the materials science component of the Henry Krumb School of Mines), Minerals Engineering and Materials Science. Within the first year of doctoral studies, candidates must take written qualifying exams on five subjects that relate to the subject of the thesis. Doctoral research committees should consist of the candidate’s senior adviser plus other faculty from other Engineering or graduate departments who can assist in the successful completion of the project.
Program of study: 60 points of advanced graduate courses beyond the B.S. degree are required, including 12 additional points for the doctoral dissertation.
Residence Units: six Residence Units beyond the B.S. plus registration fees at the defense.
In addition to the requirements for the M.Phil. degree, a dissertation embodying original research must be completed and successfully defended.
