Degree Requirements

The requirements listed below are special to this subcommittee and must be read in conjunction with the general requirements of the Graduate School. More detailed information can be obtained from the Department of Epidemiology (212-305-9412).

For the M.Phil. Degree

Program of study: To be planned on the basis of the student’s background and interests, in consultation with members of the Doctoral Program Subcommittee on Epidemiology. A list of courses required of all students may be obtained from the office of the Department of Epidemiology.

Teaching requirement: Participation in the instructional activities of the department for a minimum of one year.

Advanced standing: The educational backgrounds of students who apply for admission with advanced degrees, such as the M.D., M.P.H., M.A., or M.S. degree, must meet the requirements of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and of the admissions committee. The decision to accept already completed work for credit toward the M.Phil. and Ph.D. curriculum requirements are also made by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the admissions committee.

Examination: Successful completion of the departmental qualifying examinations is required.

For the Ph.D. Degree

After completion of all requirements for the M.Phil. degree, the student must prepare and successfully defend a dissertation. A faculty adviser, with the assistance of a faculty committee, provides consultation on an individualized study program for each student and supervises the required research and writing of the dissertation. Extensive library, computer, and other research facilities are available to those in the program.

Financial Aid

A comprehensive program of financial aid, including fellowships, traineeships, graduate research fellowships, and teaching fellowships, is available.
