Degree Requirements

The requirements listed below are special to this department and must be read in conjunction with the general requirements of the Graduate School.

For the M.A. Degree

The department accepts only candidates for the Ph.D. degree. The degree of Master of Arts must be earned by each student in the department prior to earning any higher degrees unless a student is admitted with two Residence Units of advanced standing.

Course requirements: Genetics and Development candidates for the M.A. degree must successfully complete G4150, G4501-G4502, G6210-G6211, G6300-G6301, G9321-G9322, and G9355. Additional required courses are specified by the training committee of the department for each student individually, and depend on the student’s interests and background. These requirements are usually met within two years; in no case can the fulfillment of the requirements for the M.A. degree be extended beyond two years without special permission.

For the M.Phil. Degree

Prerequisite: The M.A. degree or two Residence Units of advanced standing and completion of departmental course requirements for the M.A. degree. In addition, the following requirements must
be met:

Courses: Candidates for the M.Phil. degree in Genetics and Development must successfully complete G4010, G4027, G4050, and any additional courses as specified on an individual basis by the training committee of the department.

Examination: Successful completion of the departmental qualifying examination.

Full-time Residence Units: Six.

For the Ph.D. Degree

Prerequisite: The M.Phil. degree.

Research: Students must develop research skills and demonstrate these by preparation and oral defense of a dissertation describing their research.

Financial Aid

The department provides full support for all graduate students, including tuition, health insurance fees, and a stipend provided that they are in good academic standing.
