Degree RequirementsResidence: Two Residence Units (two semesters of full-time registration). The degree is expected to be completed in two continuous semesters.
Courses: Students enrolled in the Master's in Hispanic Cultural Studies program must complete satisfactorily a total of nine (9) course units (27 points) in one year. Normally a student takes five courses during the fall semester and four in the spring. Two courses are required of all students: Spanish G9901, Graduate Seminar on Literary and Cultural Theory, and SPAN G9810, Supervised Individual Research for the Master's Essay. The remaining courses are electives, four of which may be taken outside the department in related disciplines such as Anthropology, History, Women Studies, History of Art, Teacher's College, Music, etc. Two electives must be taken outside the department. For the departmental electives, students choose among all courses taught by the graduate faculty. Classes in the department are taught in Spanish and all requirements are in that language as well. Master’s Paper: One of the papers written for a course taken in the fall semester is rewritten and expanded during the spring semester with the help of two faculty members in the department, one of whom serves as sponsor. This essay constitutes the student’s Master’s Paper.
Financial Aid
There is no financial aid available to students admitted to the
free-standing Master's in Hispanic Cultural Studies and Pedagogy.
