Students will find a
stimulating, cosmopolitan environment for the study of Spanish and Latin
American culture. They pursue a broad, flexible course of study under the
supervision of a distinguished and diversified faculty. In addition to
departmental offerings, degree candidates can partake in the divisional
literature program, which offers courses in literary theory and criticism, and
is taught by faculty drawn from all language and literature departments.
Students may also participate in the Comparative Literature and Society Program
of the Graduate School.
The department is located in the Casa Hispánica, a five-story townhouse
adjoining Columbia’s
Morningside campus. It contains classrooms, a lecture hall, a graduate lounge
and a specialized graduate library. The Casa offers a regular program of
lectures and activities. The department also edits and publishes the Revista Hispánica Moderna.
Fellowships are awarded in recognition of academic achievement and in
expectation of scholarly success. Teaching and research experience are
considered an important aspect of the training of graduate students. Thus,
graduate fellowships include teaching and research apprenticeships.
