To earn the M.A. degree, students must complete eight courses, a long essay, and one of the two graduate language requirements. Successful completion of the M.A. requirements and approval by the interdepartmental committee are both conditions of entry into the M.Phil/Ph.D. program.
To earn the M.Phil degree, students must complete eight additional courses, fulfill the second language requirement, and pass an individually-designed and committee-approved examination in theatre history, dramatic literature, performance theory, and theatre arts. For this examination, students are required to choose a) one major field and b) two related fields or one related field and one thesis field. The exam overall must show knowledge of a substantial body of dramatic literature, as well as substantial knowledge of a field or fields in the history and theory of theatre and/or performance.
In fulfilling the two language requirements, students must demonstrate a general proficiency in one language and a reading knowledge of the other. The languages are chosen from those in which an appropriate body of dramatic literature exists. The language requirements must be satisfied at the end of the first and second years in the program. Successful completion of all M.Phil. requirements and approval by the interdepartmental committee are both conditions of entry into the Ph.D. program.
Fellowships are awarded in recognition of academic achievement an in expectation of scholarly success. Teaching and research experience are considered an important aspect of the training of graduate students. Thus, graduate fellowships include some teaching and research apprenticeship.
To earn the Ph.D. degree, students must submit a dissertation, with the choice of topic and plan of research being subject to approval by the committee and a faculty sponsor.
