The Department of Earth and Environmental
Sciences and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism cooperate in offering a
dual master’s degree program in Earth and Environmental Science Journalism
(E&ESJ). The goal of the program is to provide students with both the
scientific background and the communications skills to inform the public about
discoveries, processes, insights and controversies in earth and environmental
sciences, in a manner that is simultaneously interesting and accurate.
E&ESJ students complete two semesters of graduate-level course work in
earth and environmental sciences, a science research project, and two semesters
of course work in journalism. The sciences and journalism components are linked
through a master’s project in science writing, and a unique on case studies in earth
and environmental science journalism. Hands-on training in broadcast and new
media journalism is available, as well as in traditional print journalism.
Graduates receive an M.S. in Journalism plus an M.A. in Earth and Environmental
Science Journalism.
Special Admission Requirements
Earth and Environmental Science
Journalism is a dual degree program, which means that participation in the
program is contingent on admission to both the Graduate School of Journalism
and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (Department of Earth and
Environmental Sciences). Requirements for admission to the Department of Earth
and Environmental Sciences are an undergraduate major in science, math or
engineering, with one year of college-level study in four out of the following five
subjects: biological sciences, chemistry, geosciences, mathematics, and
physics. Other undergraduate majors may be considered in exceptional cases.
Criteria for admission to the Graduate School of Journalism are: commitment to
the profession of journalism and a keen interest in the substance of journalism,
demonstrated writing proficiency, a bachelor’s degree from an accredited
college or university reflecting multidisciplinary course work, readiness for
graduate school, professional promise, and ability to type in English. All
applicants must complete the writing test of the Graduate School of Journalism.

In addition to the requirements listed below, all students must submit
1 official transcript showing courses and grades per school attended, a
Statement of Academic Purpose and 3 letters of evaluation from academic sources. All
international students whose native language is not English or whose
undergraduate degree is from an institution in a country whose official
language is not English, must submit scores of the Test of English as a
