"The program has provided me with a useful intellectual and professional framework for my work as an English teacher. The interdisciplinary approach of the Liberal Studies M.A. Program is also a major asset. I have taken courses in American literature, but I can also pursue my interests in African-American studies and anthropology. My graduate work here has definitely helped me bring a new level of innovation to my teaching. I also appreciate the special tuition reduction offered to schoolteachers through the Liberal Studies programs."

Liberal Studies M.A. Program: American Studies
The Program in American Studies focuses on the various cultures of the United States from the viewpoint of several disciplines. Required courses in literature, history, social science, and art history give students the foundation to specialize in one period or interdisciplinary area as they design an individual program of study in consultation with their adviser. The program concludes with a substantial paper that brings synthesized perspectives from two (or more) disciplines to bear on a limited topic within the student's area of concentration. Since relatively few courses meet during evening hours, it would be difficult to complete this program taking evening courses alone.
