Registration
Having selected courses and discussed the choice with the program director and obtained course approval, the student is ready to register. The approved course list will indicate whether special permission of the course instructor is also necessary. Instructor approval is usually required when the class size is limited or when the course requires a specialized background or advanced preparation.
Before attending classes, each student must register in accordance with the procedures established for the term in question. Anticipated dates of registration are listed in the
Academic Calendar
. Any changes in these dates will be announced by the Office of the Registrar in advance of the registration period. Registration is the mechanical process of securing a seat in a class. While registration is a necessary prerequisite for
enrollment
, registration alone does not constitute enrollment for a given term. Before a student may be certified as enrolled in good standing, he or she must also satisfy administrative obligations such as paying prior term bills and demonstrating compliance with New York State's public health law requiring immunity from measles, mumps, and rubella.
The Office of the Registrar is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Students register for classes by means of touch-tone telephone or an interactive on-line system. PIN (Personal Identification Number) and assigned registration times are distributed prior to registration. The telephone registration number is (212) 854-8282.
Students who are not citizens of the United States and who need authorization for special billing of tuition and/or fees to foreign institutions, agencies, or sponsors should go to the International Students and Scholars Office, 524 Riverside Drive, with two copies of the sponsorship letter. Special billing authorization is required of students whose bills are to be sent to a third party for payment.
Immunization Requirements
New York State requires that all college and university students enrolled for 6 or more points be adequately protected against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR). Students born on or after January 1, 1957, must provide documentation of immunity. (Students born before January 1, 1957, are assumed to have had exposure and need not take further action.) For more information regarding the state law, students should contact the Health and Related Services Immunization Line at (212) 854-7210. Details on methods of documenting immunity are provided in the Health and Related Services brochure and on the Web site (
http://www.columbia.edu/cu/health/
).
In very rare cases, a student may be granted exemption from the MMR requirements if he or she submits documentation about a medical diagnosis or religious orientation that precludes further immunization. All letters will be carefully reviewed and considered by the medical director of Health and Related Services.
Please note: If you cannot provide evidence that you are immune to measles, mumps, and rubella, you will not be permitted to register for classes and may be charged a fine.
