LeClerc to Address CASE Conference
Paul LeClerc (’69 PhD, French) will be the Plenary Session Keynote Speaker at the Council for Advance and Support of Education District I & II Joint Conference, "A Meeting of the Minds," February 11-13, 2007, at the Marriott Marquis in New York City. LeClerc, President and Chief Executive Officer of the New York Public Library, will speak at lunch on Monday, February 12 about academia, where he spent his early career, and about philanthropy.
Dr. LeClerc was presented with the GSAS Dean’s Award for Distinguished Achievement in 2004 and was the Distinguished Alumni Speaker at the GSAS Alumni Association’s Annual Meeting in 2005. You can learn more about Dr. LeClerc by clicking here.
Richard Vetere in New Film
In November, 2006, Richard Vetere (’74 MA, English) appeared in the film “The Limbo Room,” screened at film festivals in Queens and Manhattan. Vetere has had a varied and extremely successful career as a poet, novelist, playwright, screenwriter, and actor. Deborah J. Fryer Presents New Documentary
On October 26, 2007, Deborah J. Fryer’s (’88 MA, Classics) new film, “Shaken,” was premiered at the VisionFest Film Festival in New York. The film chronicles a young man’s struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Currently on tour, the film has been screened in Denver, Annapolis, and Tehran. Milton Friedman, GSAS Alumnus and Free-Market Theorist, Dies
The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences is deeply saddened to announce the death on November 16 of Milton Friedman, a GSAS alumnus in Economics (’46 PhD) and winner of the 1976 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. Dr. Friedman was 94 and lived in San Francisco. read more
Barry Bergdoll Named to Curatorship at MoMA
In June, 2006, New York’s Museum of Modern Art named Columbia professor Barry Bergdoll (’86 PhD, Art History/Archaeology) as chief curator of architecture and design. Professor Bergdoll became chair of the Department of Art History and Architecture in 2004, and worked with the Graduate School of Architecture to establish a PhD program in the School. Anna Campbell Brickhouse presented with Arlt Award
The Council of Graduate Studies announces that Anna Campbell Brickhouse (’98 PhD, English and Comparative Literature) has been presented with their annual Gustave O. Arlt Award, recognizing outstanding work by a young humanities scholar. Dr. Brickhouse is Associate Professor of English at the University of Virginia.

Kevin Collins Elected to Office on New Jersey Commission on Higher Education
Kevin J. Collins, Esq. (’95 MA, American Studies) has been elected Vice Chairman of the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education. Mr. Collins is a former member of the University Senator and member of the GSAS Alumni Association Board of Directors. He was presented with an Alumni Medal in 2002. Kevin is a past president of the Bergen-Passaic Alumni Club and remains an active member.
Basil Fuleihan Dies in Lebanon Attack
On February 14, 2005, GSAS alumnus Basil Fuleihan (’90 PhD, Economics) was critically injured while riding in a motorcade with former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri. Hariri, in addition to 16 others in the motorcade, was killed. Rushed to a Paris hospital, Dr. Fuleihan was expected to live only three days. After fighting for his life for over two months, Dr. Fuleihan succumbed to his injuries on April 18, 2005. Dr. Fuleihan served in the United Nations Development Program and other posts before becoming Lebanese Minister of Finance and later Minister of Economy and Trade. At the time of his death, Dr. Fuleihan was serving as a member of the Parliament of Lebanon. The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences joins many others in mourning the loss of this extraordinary man.
