Identifying and Developing Goals and Strategies for an Effective Academic Job Search

Thursday, January 31, 2008, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. 301 Philosophy Hall

gsaspff@columbia.edu

This session will introduce Columbia’s Preparing Future Faculty program. We’ll discuss the academic profession and planning for faculty roles and responsibilities. We’ll also suggest a strategic plan, for you to individualize, to complete the PhD (or post-doc), conduct the academic job search, and transition to a faculty position. We’ll also include suggestions for how to know when you’re ready to enter to the job market.

Welcome…What is this PFF at Columbia?

What is the national PFF model (a brief overview) and how has it contributed to needed reforms in graduate education?

How can you select and plan for a path to the academic profession (post-doc, tenure track, and adjunct faculty positions)?

What do the Carnegie categories of colleges and universities tell you about the academic job market and expectations for (new) faculty?

Professor John Stauffer, Harvard University, Department of English

How can you take control and enhance your chances for success on the job market?

How do you make the decisions about which positions to apply for…and when to go out on the academic job market?

How can you develop and use a strategic plan for completing the Ph.D., conducting the academic job search, and transitioning to a new faculty or post-doc position?

Discussion and Q & A

Assessing needs for the next session
