Funding Sources
The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Columbia University offers
a comprehensive program of student financial aid. Fellowships are
awarded on a competitive basis for students applying to the Ph.D.
program in recognition of academic achievement and in expectation of
scholarly success. Fellowships pay tuition and provide a yearly
stipend.
Students who are not awarded fellowships
finance their education via financial aid awards (a package consisting
of Stafford loans, work study, and/or other low interest loan
programs) or Assistantships. Students may be offered or secure a
position in a department as a graduate assistant or departmental
research assistant. Assistantships generally pay tuition and fees and a
modest stipend. Applicants are urged to compete for all national,
regional, and foundation fellowships in addition to those available at
Columbia.
Other Sources of Financial Support
In addition to the national scholarships be sure
to research all forms of financial assistance available to
underrepresented students. You should begin to research information and
apply for fellowships about one year before you wish to begin graduate
study. Outside resources create an option for funding your graduate
education. Two of the major fellowships for minority students are the
Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship for Minorities and The National
Science Foundation Minority Graduate Fellowships. The application
deadlines for both are in early November.
