The Liberal Studies M.A. (LSMA) degree programs are designed
to meet the needs of teachers, people in government, the professions and
industry. These students have an interest - whether professional or personal -
in a particular field. While the LSMA is not designed to prepare students for
the Ph.D. or for a career as a research scholar, it may form the basis for study
leading to a more advanced degree.
The Liberal Studies Master of Arts is
currently offered in eight interdisciplinary fields: American Studies, East
Asian Studies, Human Rights Studies, Islamic Studies, Jewish Studies, Medieval
Studies, Modern European Studies and South Asian Studies. The M.A. typically
requires one or two core courses at the beginning of the program, related
courses drawn from a wide range of subjects, and a seminar or colloquium that
brings together the multidisciplinary perspectives of the program through an
extended research paper.
Applicants to the Liberal Studies M.A. programs
use the standard application
forms found on this website. You may contact the Liberal Studies
Master of Arts Office at 109A Low Memorial Library, (212) 854-4932 for more
information about the programs.
