The faculty establish the specific requirements for each degree as well as standards of satisfactory academic progress. These standards are described in the appropriate section of the Rules and Regulations and in material published separately by the departments.

All students (except those in the Liberal Studies Master of Arts program) are required to register for Residence Units. The Residence Unit, full, half or quarter registration per semester rather than registration for individual courses, provides the basis for tuition charges. Two Residence Units are required for the Master of Arts degree, and six Residence Units, including the two for the M.A. degree, are required for the Master of Philosophy degree and the Ph.D.

Continuous registration until completion of all requirements is obligatory for each degree. After completing the appropriate number of Residence Units, students register at reduced tuition rates. The registration category Extended Residence (ER) is required for any term in which the student fulfills a degree requirement or holds a teaching or research fellowship; otherwise, registration in the category Matriculation and Facilities (M&F) is required.

Requirements in most Ph.D. programs are designed to be met in five to six years. Students in sequential M.A/M.Phil./Ph.D. programs are required to complete the M.A. requirement in no more than two years. In most departments, requirements for the Master of Philosophy, a degree in course, should be completed before the end of the fourth year. No more than seven years from entrance will be permitted to complete Ph.D. requirements. Students in free-standing Master’s programs usually complete the M.A. requirement in one or two years, but may take up to four years, unless otherwise specified by the department.  Students on F-1 or J-1 visas are required to register full-time and thus complete the Master’s degree in one or two years.

If a student takes more than the normal time to complete requirements for the Ph.D., he or she must officially request an extension and, if granted, may be obligated to satisfy increased or changed degree requirements.
