The research activities of the department encompass a range of topics in biochemistry, biophysics and molecular biology. These include X-ray diffraction studies of biological macromolecules, computer studies of protein and nucleic acid structure and function, NMR spectroscopy, enzymology, regulation of transcription and translation, molecular virology, control of gene expression in development, structure and composition of synaptic components, cell surface receptors, neuronal development and signal transduction.

Fellowships are awarded in recognition of academic achievement and in expectation of scholarly success. Teaching and research experience are considered an important aspect of the training of graduate students. Thus, graduate fellowships include teaching assistantships and research apprenticeships.

Special Admission Requirements

Basic knowledge of biology, mathematics, organic chemistry, physical chemistry and physics is required. The subject GRE in biochemistry, biology, cell and molecular biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics is optional.
