Biostatistics brings to bear results from statistical and probability theory on problems in human health and disease. The purpose of the Ph.D. program in biostatistics is to prepare individuals to develop new or to adapt existing statistical methods for solving problems in the health field. Resources available at Columbia include extensive library and computer facilities, as well as myriad opportunities for involvement in numerous research activities in the biomedical sciences and clinical research,which can lead to dissertation topics.

Fellowships are awarded in recognition of academic achievement and in expectation of scholarly success. Teaching and research experience are considered an important aspect of the training of graduate students. Thus, graduate fellowships include some teaching and research apprenticeship.


Special Admission Requirements

In addition to the requirements listed below, all students must submit 1 official transcript showing courses and grades per school attended, a Statement of Academic Purpose and 3 letters of evaluation from academic sources. All international students whose native language is not English or whose undergraduate degree is from an institution in a country whose official language is not English, must submit scores of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or IELTS. Admission to the Ph.D. program in biostatistics requires a Master’s degree in biostatistics or statistics or the equivalent. For Master's degree programs in biostatistics that provide good preparation for the PhD, go to: http://www.mailman.hs.columbia.edu/biostat/academics.html. Students who enter the Ph.D. program with a Master’s degree in statistics or an equivalent degree may be required to take additional master’s level course work in the Mailman School of Public Health as part of their Ph.D. training.
