The following departments cooperate in offering a graduate program in medieval and Renaissance studies: Art History and Archaeology, Classics, English and Comparative Literature, French and Romance Philology, History, Italian, Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures, Music, Philosophy, Religion, and Spanish and Portuguese. Applicants to the program must be admitted first in the usual way to one of the participating departments and then to the Interdepartmental Committee on Medieval and Renaissance Studies, and must satisfy their formal requirements to earn the M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees.

The Certificate in Medieval and Renaissance Studies

The certificate is granted by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences on the recommendation of the Steering Committee of the Interdepartmental Committee, normally after four terms of residence. Candidates for the certificate will be expected to declare their candidacy as soon as possible after admission to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. (For most areas of medieval and Renaissance studies, some previous work in Latin and in at least one modern language is essential. For certain areas Arabic, Hebrew, or Greek is indispensable.)
