The graduate program in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Columbia aims to provide students with a rigorous formation in the literatures and cultures of Spain and Latin America, to oversee their specialization in one or more areas of Hispanic studies, and to allow them the flexibility to pursue comparative or interdisciplinary work under the supervision of a distinguished faculty. Students complement their work in the department with coursework in other disciplines such as Comparative Literature, Philosophy, History, and English. Certificate programs are available also in Comparative Literature and Society, and Medieval and Renaissance Studies. In addition, certification in Feminist Scholarship is available through the Institute for Research on Women and Gender.
Teaching, research, and professional training are considered an important aspect of the development of our graduate students. Teaching Fellows participate in an extensive teacher training program sponsored by the department. Students typically have the opportunity to teach the various levels of the language instruction sequence as well as courses on Hispanic culture. In addition, the department sponsors workshops on topics such as writing an abstract for submission to a conference, navigating the profession, preparing for the job market, mastering research tools, writing a grant proposal, etc.
The department is located in the Casa Hispánica, a five-story townhouse adjoining Columbia's Morningside campus. It contains classrooms, a lecture hall, a graduate lounge and a specialized graduate library. The Hispanic Institute, housed in the department, offers a regular program of lectures and activities. It also sponsors the Revista Hispánica Moderna, a prestigious academic journal published since 1934. Graduate students may serve as editorial assistants to the journal, thereby acquiring first-hand knowledge of the workings of an academic publication.
In addition to the requirements listed below, all students must submit 1 official transcript showing courses and grades per school attended, a Statement of Academic Purpose, a writing sample (a course paper, term paper, etc.) and 3 letters of evaluation from academic sources. All international students whose native language is not English or whose undergraduate degree is from an institution in a country whose official language is not English, must submit scores of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or IELTS.
