*M.A. degrees are awarded three times during the academic year—in October, February, and May. Once all necessary requirements have been completed, it is the student’s responsibility to file an application with the Diploma Division of the Registrar’s Office or with their department or program office by the appropriate deadline (see above) in order to receive the degree. Applications received after the deadline will be applied to the next conferral date. Convocation and Commencement ceremonies are held in May.
**When a deadline falls on a weekend, the deadline for submission will be extended until the next business day.

*Candidates who have completed all the necessary requirements apply through their departments in order to receive the M.Phil. degree. Applications for the M.Phil. degree can be filed at any point in the calendar year. Degrees are conferred three times during the academic year—in October, February, and May. Students receiving an M.Phil. only do not participate in Convocation nor Commencement ceremonies.

*Ph.D. degrees are conferred three times during the academic
year—in October, February, and May. Students intending to defend the Ph.D.
dissertation must file an Application for Dissertation Defense in their
departments (see above for deadlines.) When the faculty committee has certified
that the student has passed the dissertation defense, the candidate must, in
order to receive the degree, arrange with the Dissertation Office (107 Low
Memorial Library) for the deposit of the dissertation. A fee of $160, in the
form of a money order or certified check, is payable to Columbia University
at the time of deposit.
