The Office of Student Affairs has primary responsibility for the general welfare of the School’s 3,800 graduate students. The Director for Student Services is the GSAS liaison to the University’s Institutional Real Estate Office and the University Libraries. The Office works to develop and implement fair and accessible policies in these areas, and it also serves as a resource for students who have questions or concerns about any aspect of student life. The Director of Student Services provides advice and support to the Graduate School Advisory Council (GSAC) and other recognized student groups, organizes major events such as orientation and convocation, and oversees the Graduate Student Lounge and GSAS Student Resource Center.

GSAS Student Resource Center serves graduate students in a wide variety of nonacademic areas and provides information and direction for solving problems. The office assists graduate students with their housing needs, manages the Graduate Student Lounge in 301 Philosophy Hall, and works closely with departments and with the Graduate Student Advisory Council (GSAC).

Graduate students can also find information here on the following programs and services: Ph.D. Matching Travel Grants, Inter-University Doctoral Consortium, Exchange Scholar Program, and letters of introduction for students conducting research abroad (Blue Seal Letters). The GSAS Student Lounge and Resource Center in 301 Philosophy Hall is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tea is usually served daily from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Periodicals, newspapers, and magazines are available as are computers and printers. 301 Philosophy also serves as an information center for cultural events on campus and throughout the metropolitan area. Notices of international student events, museum exhibitions, lectures, and performances are posted on the GSAS bulletin boards.
