• Director of Graduate Studies in the Student’s Department
• Chair of the Student’s Department
• Ombuds Officer
http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ombuds/ The Ombuds Office offers confidential and
neutral attention to complaints. It serves all campuses—Morningside, Medical,
Lamont, and Nevis—and is available to the entire Columbia University
community (students, faculty, and employees) for assistance in seeking fair and
equitable solutions to various problems through informal processes.
• GSAS Associate Deans for M.A. and Ph.D. Programs
The GSAS Procedure for Student Grievances governs cases in which a student has a complaint “against individuals subject to the authority of the Dean including administrators, faculty members, a department or program, or fellow GSAS students.” The appropriate Associate Dean is responsible for assisting students regarding the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences grievance policy. For the policy, click here.
If the student is unsatisfied with the School resolution, or he or she believes that a direct complaint to the Office of the Vice President for Arts and Sciences is more appropriate, the student may invoke the procedures adopted by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences for resolving grievances relating to faculty misconduct. Those procedures are found at http://www.columbia.edu/cu/vpas/.
