Liberal Studies M.A. Program: American Studies


Requirements

All students in the program should consult the program adviser regularly. The requirements here are special to the program and should be read in conjunction with the general requirements for the Liberal Studies M.A. degree. Thirty-six points of courses dealing with the United States are required. Of these, 6 points may be allowed in transfer credit from another university if the faculty committee on admissions approves. Thirty points must be completed in Columbia courses. The program includes:
  • one introductory course (3 points), usually American Studies G4000 - Introduction to American Studies
  • two courses (6 points) in American literature
  • two courses (6 points) in American history
  • one course (3 points) in art history or architecture
  • two courses (6 points) chosen from the Departments of Anthropology, Economics, Film, Music, Political Science, Religion, and Sociology
  • two elective courses (6 points) chosen from the list of approved courses
  • one graduate seminar (3 points)
  • the final paper (3 points), to be completed in the final term. Students register for Research G4990--Research seminar or, with the approval of the program adviser, they may register for American Studies G4999--Supervised individual research.
