Liberal Studies M.A. Program: East Asian Studies
Requirements
All students in the program should consult the program adviser regularly. The requirements listed here are special to the program in East Asian Studies and should be read in conjunction with the general requirements for the Liberal Studies M.A. degree. Thirty-six points of courses dealing with East Asia (China, Korea, and Japan) are required. Of these, 6 points may be allowed in transfer credit from another university with the approval of the faculty committee on admissions. Thirty points must be completed in Columbia courses:
-
the introductory course (3 points),
East Asian G4000-Introduction to East Asian studies
-
three courses (9 points) in one of the following groups: history (including art history); literature; religion and thought; social sciences (anthropology, economics, political science, sociology)
-
two courses (6 points) in one of the groups not selected for B
-
one course (3 points) in one of the groups not selected for B or C
-
four courses (12 points) chosen in consultation with the program adviser, of which 6 points may be in language courses
-
the final paper (3 points), to be completed in the final term, under the direction of an adviser. Students register for
East Asian G4999-Supervised individual research
or
Research G4990-Research seminar.
Students who choose to specialize in the study of one East Asian country must include in their program at least 6 points of course work dealing with another East Asian country or countries.
Those contemplating work beyond the Liberal Studies M.A. degree should begin to acquire proficiency in the relevant language(s) as early as possible. Although no transfer credit can be given for language courses or for language proficiency, students who complete upper-level (3000 level or higher) Chinese, Japanese, or Korean courses at Columbia may receive up to 6 points of credit.
