Orientation Events

Campus Tour:
Tours are on Mondays through Fridays at 11:00 a.m. and
2:00 p.m. (except on major holidays); meet at the Visitors Center
on the second floor of Low Memorial Library.

Library Orientation:
Columbia Libraries have rich holdings in electronic, print, and other formats to support your study and research as well as a staff eager to help you find those materials.  An excellent way to orient yourself to these resources and the range of library services is to attend one of the "Getting Your Bearings" orientations, tailored specifically to the needs of graduate students.  Those 90-minute sessions take place in Butler Library and provide a brief tour of key sites in Butler, home to the history and humanities collection and many central library services, followed by an overview of the campus information system.
To attend, simply come to the Reference Desk in 301 Butler (one flight up from the building entrance), at any of the times listed here.

The Libraries also urge you to consider taking one of their workshops to learn  general database searching skills, become acquainted with the key resources in your subject area, or becoming more adept at  using various software tools (EndNote, NVIVO, Adobe Photoshop, scanning and  OCR tools, etc.)  A full list of offerings and online registration forms can be found here.

Shopping at Target on your own:
Quick ride on IRT 7th Ave. subway: Take advantage of Target's superstore in the Bronx - just north of Manhattan - to purchase items for your apartment. Travel to 225th Street and back to campus by IRT 7th-Avenue subway; the station is at 116th Street and Broadway.  You can get an idea of products and prices here

Another mega-store, Marshall's, is located nearby.  Both are known for low prices. Cost: $4.00 round trip by subway.
