Graduate school is a time of high anxiety for most participants - involving struggles to achieve balance in life, maintain personal health (physical and mental), deal with stress and burnout, manage other's expectations, and navigate professional and personal relationships... all with limited free time. A high degree of anxiety is also associated with activities related to teaching (i.e., preparation, anticipation, and classroom interactions) - particularly for first-time graduate student instructors.
The Graduate Student Resource Group is a forum for graduate students to voice concerns, identify strategies for dealing with problematic situations, talk with one another regarding difficulties with teaching and the more general ups-and-downs of graduate student life.
When possible, a guest speaker (i.e., staff/faculty from career education, the office of disability services, student affairs, academic departments) will be invited to attend the first 30 minutes of the group to answer questions and serve as a resource to group members.
The group will run biweekly on Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Contact Leslie Alkalay, Clinical Psychologist, la2299@columbia.edu
