Illustrations, figures, graphs and photographs:

Although color photographs, high quality photocopies, and scanned images are acceptable, please be aware that the microfilmed and digitized versions of the dissertation produced by ProQuest is in black and white.

Laser-printed color or black and white images, figures, graphs, etc. on 25% cotton paper are accepted. Originals or photocopies of line drawings, graphs, charts, etc. may be submitted. The author must mount all photographs and illustrations smaller than 8 1/2" x 11" onto the same type of paper specified for the text. A non-disintegrating or archival quality adhesive should be used. These glues may be found in art or photo supply stores. For 8 1/2" x 11" photographs, high-quality photographic paper is acceptable for final deposit. Keep in mind that all pages, including those with illustrations, graphs, figures and photographs, need page numbers as well.

Paper

For the final deposit copies, one must use 8 1/2" x 11" white paper, which is at least 20 lb. weight and at least 25% rag or cotton content. If this paper is held up to a light, a watermark indicating the brand name and rag content will be visible. These strict rules are necessary to avoid paper that yellows, curls, or becomes brittle with age. The Dissertation Office will not accept the deposit if this specific paper is not used and will require recopying of the dissertation onto the proper paper. Lined, punched, colored (including off-white, natural white and ivory,) photocopy, acid-free xerox, or computer paper is not acceptable. The deposit copies must not be bound unless the author has chosen the commercial publication option, see here. Students submitting dissertations that include musical scores are also required to use 20lb and 25% rag or cotton paper, although it may be larger than 8 ½” x 11”.

Photocopies may be used for the final deposit as long as the quality is excellent and is on the proper paper. All pages must be single-sided. If the dissertation is copied at a professional copy center, both copies should be double-checked prior to deposit to insure that the pages are in the correct order, that none are missing, and that there are no smudges or roller marks.

The Dissertation Office recommends Columbia University Printing Services for reproduction and delivery of your dissertation: 212-854-3233, printing@columbia.edu.

Style

The author should follow the leading manuals in his or her field regarding style unless it conflicts with the requirements set out in these instructions. Check with the advisor and department/program about their policies on style. Any quotations, references and phrases in foreign languages should follow departmental or disciplinary style. GSAS recommends the most recent editions of these style manuals: Kate Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, University of Chicago Press; MLA Style Sheet, New York Modern Language Association of America; The Chicago Manual of Style, University of Chicago Press; Publication Manual, American Psychological Association.

Dissertations written in Foreign Languages

Students whose dissertations were approved to be written in a language other than English in one of the approved departments should consult Dissertations in Foreign Languages.

Corrections

No ink corrections, strikeovers, correction fluid or tape, paste-ups, insertions between lines, and taped-on corrections are permitted on the final deposit copies. If corrections must be made, they must be made on the manuscript before it is printed onto rag paper. The printing process should result in a clean, corrected copy suitable for deposit. To avoid formatting issues visit or email the dissertation office with sample pages of your work.

Once the dissertation is deposited, no changes can be made to the text. The single exception to this rule is that once the dissertation has been scanned and made available online by ProQuest, candidates may replace pages through ProQuest directly for a republishing fee of approximately $45; contact ProQuest at 1-800-521-0600, extension x7020, or disspub@proquest.com. No changes can be made the two copies of the dissertation in the Columbia Libraries.

Typists and Proofreaders

The Dissertation Office does not refer typists or proofreaders to candidates. It is recommended, however, that the author obtain a written statement of rates, an estimate of total cost and an agreement about time required to complete the job before committing to a typist or proofreader.
