At any time within ten years from the date of the award of
the M.Phil. degree and subject to approval for continuation toward the Ph.D.
degree by the department or Ph.D. program chair, a recipient of the M.Phil.
degree who has not continued studies in residence at the University may present
to the Dean, in lieu of a sponsored dissertation, a substantial body of
independent and original published scholarly material toward completion of the
requirements for the Ph.D. degree. The publisher of the material must be a
recognized scholarly publisher in the field, rather than a vanity press. A
recipient of the M.Phil. degree who has not continued studies in residence at
the University is not entitled to regular guidance or supervision by the
Faculty.
The applicant requests that the department/program chair
review material prepared extra muros to judge its appropriateness for defense.
If the material is deemed appropriate, the department/program forwards the
materials and a letter of recommendation to the Dean. A curriculum vitae should
accompany this material.
The submitted material is reviewed by the Dean in
consultation with the department/program to determine whether or not the
applicant is eligible to sit for the final examination. If the decision to
examine the candidate is favorable, the Dean, in consultation with the Chair of
the department/program, names for this purpose a committee of five members, of
whom three members are from the department/program, and names one member as
chair. Two members are from outside the department/program. The candidate is
responsible for distributing the copies of the published scholarly material to
the five members of the defense committee.
The final examination is designed to satisfy the examination
committee that in its judgment the quality of the candidate's work meets the
standards of the University for the awarding of the Ph.D. degree. The
examination may be taken only once, and it is either passed or failed.
A unanimous vote or a vote with only one dissent in a lower
column constitutes a pass. The applicant must be registered for the term in
which he or she sits for the final examination.
