Teaching and Research Appointments

Within the limits of availability and the competence of individual students, all multi-year Fellows will be required to participate in the teaching and research programs of their departments as a form of scholarly apprenticeship in at least three years of their fellowships. Compensation for such service will be supplemented to a level no less than that awarded for the first year of the fellowship. Other fellowships may include a teaching/research appointment as available in each department.

A significant part of the GSAS fellowship budget is a Federal Work-Study allocation that is used for eligible students who have an instructional component in their fellowship award. A portion of the stipend for these studnets is funded from Federal Work-Study accounts. The overall fellowship award remains the same as indicated in your fellowship award letter for 2007-2008, regardless of a student's eligibility for this stipend transfer.

This is separate from the allocation that is provided individually to students who obtain Work-Study jobs on campus. If a portion of your stipend is transferred to these accounts, it does not affect your eligibility for other federal aid.

In order to use this necessary source of fellowship funding, we need to identify a large number of eligible students. Therefore, ALL students who have been awarded teaching or research fellowships for the 2007-2008 academic year, and who are US citizens or Permanent Residents, are required to submit the following financial aid forms as a condition of their fellowship:
  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The FAFSA can be filed online. Be sure to include the GSAS Federal school code, E00113. If you file online, we should receive an eletronic response from your application or the Student Aid Report (SAR). Paper SARs should be forworded to the Office of Financial Aid.

  • Columbia University Application for Loans and/or Workstudy
Please complete both sides of the application and obtain departmental signatures for certification of progress.

You may be selected by the Department of Education for verification when you complete your FAFSA. If so, you may be asked to submit a verification worksheet along witha copy of your 2006 federal tax return. If you are selected for verification, additional information will be sent to you at that time.

If you have already submitted these forms for the 2007-2008 year as directed by your department or in order to get loans or other federal aid, you need not submit them again.

Students with dissertation or travel fellowships are not required to submit financial aid forms. Additionally, international students (F-1 or J-1 visa holders) are not eligible for Federal Work-Study and are not required to provide financial aid information.

We ask that you submit these forms as soon as apossible and not later than August 31. Please note that missing forms may delay disbursement of your fellowship.
