Teaching and Research Appointments

Within the limits of availability and the competence of individual students, all multi-year Fellows are required to participate in the teaching and research programs of their departments as a form of scholarly apprenticeship in at least three years of their fellowships. Compensation for such service will be supplemented to a level no less than that awarded for the first year of the fellowship. Other fellowships may include a teaching/research appointment as available in each department.

A significant part of the GSAS fellowship budget is a Federal Work-Study allocation that is used for eligible students appointed as teaching or research fellows.  A portion of the stipend for these students is funded from Federal Work-Study accounts but does not affect the total overall award received.

Please note:  This allocation is separate from the award that is provided individually to students who obtain Work-Study jobs on campus.  It has no effect on an individual’s eligibility for Work-Study or other federal aid.

In order to use this necessary source of fellowship funding, we need to identify a large number of eligible students. Therefore, ALL students who have been awarded teaching or research fellowships for the 2008-2009 academic year, and who are US citizens or Permanent Residents, are required to submit the following financial aid forms as a condition of their fellowship:
  • Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The FAFSA can be filed online. Be sure to include the GSAS Federal school code, E00113. If you file online, we should receive an electronic response from your application or the Student Aid Report (SAR). Paper SARs should be forwarded to the Office of Financial Aid.

  • Columbia University Application for Loans and/or Workstudy
Please complete both sides of the application available here and obtain departmental signatures for certification of progress.

You may be selected by the Department of Education for verification when you complete your FAFSA. If so, you may be asked to submit a verification worksheet along with a copy of your 2006 federal tax return. If you are selected for verification, additional information will be sent to you at that time.

If you have already submitted these forms for the 2007-2008 year as directed by your department or in order to get loans or other federal aid, you need not submit them again.

Students with dissertation or travel fellowships are not required to submit financial aid forms. Additionally, international students (F-1 or J-1 visa holders) are not eligible for Federal Work-Study and are not required to provide financial aid information.

We ask that you submit these forms as soon as apossible and not later than October 1. Please note that missing and/or incomplete forms may delay disbursement of your fellowship.

If you have any questions, please contact the GSAS Office of Financial Aid at 212.854.3808.
