A Columbia University fellowship is an academic
honor awarded by the University to a person of its selection to further
his or her studies or research. A fellowship generally pays part or all
of the tuition, the medical and insurance fees required by the
University for a full program, and, if indicated in the letter of
award, provides a stipend. Faculty Fellowships, if indicated in the
letter of the award, may continue for more than one year.
In signifying acceptance of a Columbia
University award, a student acknowledges his or her understanding of
the regulations stated below.
All Fellows, except Reid Hall and
Traveling Fellows, must reside in New York City or its vicinity during
the term of their award in order to devote full time to academic
studies. Any interruption of study during the year, except for regular
University vacations, will terminate an award. Holders of all
fellowships must register during the registration period indicated in
the Academic Calendar. Fellowship stipends are ordinarily paid during
the registration period in September and January. Most students in the
Natural Sciences and all students holding service appointments will be
paid at the end of each month. Should a Fellow resign his or her
appointment during the year of the award, a prorated portion (the
amount to be determined by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
Office of Financial Aid) must be returned to the University.
University funds are insufficient to
provide fellowships to all worthy students. In order to assist as many
students as possible, all Fellows who receive funds from an outside
source, e.g., an NSF or Javits Fellowship, are required to accept that
award, which will run concurrently with the Columbia Fellowship. Students who win external funding should refer to the External Fellowship Policy. It is
the responsibility of the Fellow to report outside awards to the Office
of Financial Aid for the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
Certain Faculty Fellowships are expected
to continue for more than one year. Although it is our intention to
guarantee the award for the designated period, the guarantee is not
unconditional; continuation from year to year is contingent on meeting
the published standards for performance and progress established by
your department. These standards, which are available in the
department, are set at a level commensurate with the high academic
promise that led to your original selection as a Fellow.
Therefore all Fellows, including those
holding awards of multi-year tenure, must apply annually in writing for
renewal of their fellowships. An application, which must be submitted
by a Spring semester deadline which varies by department, will initiate
the process of review. Note also that since the University considers
funding a cooperative venture between students and departments, Fellows
are expected to take advantage of all opportunities to obtain funding
from external sources such as private foundations and government
agencies. As part of an application for renewal, each Fellow is
required to submit evidence of at least one bona fide effort to obtain
funding from an agency external to the University.
A Fellow wishing to accept any employment must first be granted permission by the Office of Financial Aid at GSAS.
