Mailing List
The Club also operates a mailing list to which the monthly schedules
are posted (in addition to the website). Schedules for a month are
typically sent out the last week of the month preceding. The mailing
list is managed automatically by software. To have your email
address added to this mailing list, send a
subscribe email to "hiking-request@columbia.edu"
with just the word "subscribe" as the message. If you are on the list
and wish to unsubscribe, send mail to "hiking-request@columbia.edu" with
just the word "unsubscribe" as the body. If you are not sure whether you
are on the list, just send a subscribe email as directed, and if you
are already on the list the request will be ignored.
Equipment required
All members require a good pair of hiking boots with ankle support
and woolen socks. Those who wish to go on hikes in the winter should
have water-proof boots and cold-weather clothes: wool, silk, or synthetic
underwear, insulating layers like wool or fleece and weatherproof outerwear.
Hikers also need a day-pack or a bookbag to carry food and water. The
club does not provide food or water, and everyone is expected to bring
their own lunch and two quarts or more of water.
Hiking boots run from $30 to $70, and waterproof hikers from $100 to $200,
and can be purchased at Eastern Mountain Sports ,
Paragon Sports or
Campmor.
Hiking clothes and accessories are available at
Patagonia and
Eastern Mountain Sports.
Hike leaders carry a first-aid kit which contains gauze and
ace-bandages, and are usually certified to administer first aid and
CPR.
Questions
- What are the benefits of membership, and how much does it cost?
Membership costs just $15 per semester. Currently, benefits include discounted hikes, members-only social events, free first aid CPR classes, and use of club gear on sponsored trips. As our membership grows, we will be able to offer more and better programs to all members.
- Who can become a member?
Anyone who is a member of the Columbia Gym can become a member. This can
include Alumnus, Spouses and affiliated students.
- I'm not currently a Columbia student. Can I hike?
Any
Columbia affiliate (alum, staff, student, spouse, partner)
can hike as a member. Due to liability issues non-Columbia affiliates are not allowed on the trips. See the
signup section for details.
- How do I sign up?
This can mean three things.
- Is there an easier way to pay than going to the club sports office?
Yes, you can use Paypal to signup online. See the signup section for details.
- Are there volunteer opportunities?
There sure are, and most of them are compensated with free hikes! The club is always looking for more leaders and drivers.
Leader and driver orientations are typically held a few times each semester.
We also need occasional help posting flyers and running social events.
Email Corinne Leloup (corinne_leloup at yahoo.com) if you are interested.
- Can I take my dog along on hikes?
Unfortunately, not at this time.
