Trips
The Club organizes hikes approximately every week during the
Fall and Spring semesters, and approximately every other week
in the Summer. Each hike consists of a leader, a certified driver and anywhere
from five to twelve hikers. The vans that are used for the hikes take a
maximum of fifteen people (including leader and driver), and is the
limiting factor in the number of people who can go on a hike.
Day Trips
Most hikes are day hikes which leave at 8 AM and return between 6PM and 8PM on
Saturdays and Sundays. Travel time is one to two hours to the
destination which include Bear Mountain, the Hudson Highlands, the
Catskills, Mohonk and Minnewaska. Transportation is by a Columbia van
which seats 15 and is the limiting factor of group size.
Hikes vary in distance from 6 to 12 miles and are on trails which
include rock scrambles but no climbing. No specialized training is required.
Day-trips are color-coded according to their difficulty. The schedule and
rating can be found in the schedule page.
All day-hikes start at 8 AM on the corner of Amsterdam and 116th st.
Hike leaders carry a first-aid kit which contains gauze and
ace-bandages, and are usually certified to administer first aid and
CPR.
Camping Trips
The club organizes two or so camping trips during each Semester to the
Catskills, the Adirondacks and the White Mountains. Camping trips are
typically weekend or three day trips and consist of approximately 8
people (Many wilderness areas limit group size to a maximum of 10).
Club members can rent tents, backpacks, sleeping-bags and stoves for a
nominal fee from the Columbia Co-op program. Food for the trips are
typically collectively organized. Camping trips cost $20/day to signup
which includes food.
Camping trips typically leave at 5 PM on
Thursday or Friday from the Columbia gates, and return Sunday
evening. The leader of the trips is required to have First-Aid and CPR
training.
Camping trips are planned in response to requests. So if you are
interested in a camping trip, or better yet, if you are experienced
and are interested in helping organize one, please contact the leaders.
