Biography
Carolyn Arena, a Milwaukee native, earned a B.A. in History with Comprehensive Honors from the University of Wisconsin- Madison. Her senior thesis topic was "The Hat Act of 1732: American Manufacture and International Competition in Atlantic Markets." In 2008, she began her PhD in International and Global History at Columbia, where she continues researching trade, smuggling, and bureaucratic entanglements of 17th and 18th century empires.
For 2009-2010, Carolyn is the Social Chair and Sports Chair for the Graduate History Association; please contact her with any ideas for fun group activities, or if you would like to form a team for any of Columbia's intramural co-ed sports. She is also the co-rapporteur for Columbia's Early American Seminar (Professor Evan Haefeli, Chair).
Apart from studying history, Carolyn enjoys trivia, Karaoke, dancing, and distance running (each on an amateurish, but enthusiastic, level).
