Biography
Susan Mays is an advanced Ph.D. candidate focusing on modern China's economic and business history. Her dissertation deals with the advances of China's electronics industry, particularly the semiconductor industry, in the post-1978 era. She is interested in China's role in the global electronics supply chain, as well as the role of electronic technology in supporting the development of other industries in China. Ms. Mays' master's thesis (A.M., Harvard, 2002) addressed China's military in the 1980s and its efforts to use arms sales to raise capital for the purchase of more advanced military technologies. At Columbia, she is a Hofstadter Fellow, a Weatherhead Fellow (2004-2005), and a Teaching Fellow. Ms. Mays was a management consultant in the 1990s, and prior to consulting, she worked for Texas Instruments and Raychem. She has an M.S. in Engineering-Economic Systems (Stanford, 1993) and B.S. in Industrial Engineering (Purdue, 1991.)
