Fellowships & Aid
Beginning in fall 2001, every student entering our Ph.D. program will receive a full fellowship (tuition, fees, and a stipend) either upon admission or after successful completion of the first year of graduate study. Students awarded such funding upon admission will receive five years of support (except for those entering with advanced standing, who will receive four years of support). Fellowships awarded beginning in year two of the program provide support for four years (three years for students with advanced standing). In all cases, continuation of the fellowship is subject to satisfactory performance. These fellowships carry teaching appointments in some or all years of support except the last, which is devoted solely to dissertation research.

In addition to these fellowships, students are eligible for several other kinds of teaching appointments in Columbia College and in the History Department:

  • Students who have completed at least two years in the Ph.D. program are eligible for appointment in the Undergraduate Writing, the required writing course for all students in Columbia College. Students appointed to this program receive up to two years of full funding, including a stipend equal to those awarded to students doing departmental teaching, as well as a summer stipend for those who have completed two years of service.
  • Any student who has received the M. Phil. is eligible to apply to teach in the two central courses of Columbia College's core curriculum, Contemporary Civilization (CC) and Literature Humanities (LitHum). These appointments also provide full funding plus a stipend somewhat higher than the normal fellowship stipend.
  • Finally, students are also eligible for one-term teaching fellowships in the History Department that provide tuition, fees, and one-half of the regular full-year fellowship stipend. The number of such fellowships is determined by need and available funds.

There are, finally, many other opportunities for fellowship support, some from within the university and many from without. Most are directed at advanced students. Within Columbia, there are Whiting fellowships, which support the final stages of work on a dissertation, and other fellowships to support travel abroad and study of foreign languages. Some are targeted directly at minority students. Outside Columbia, there are many fellowships supporting many different kinds of historical research and writing. Guides to available outside fellowships are available through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

Brebner Travel Fund

A fund bequeathed to the department by the late Professor J. Bartlett Brebner provides limited funds (up to $250) for travel expenses of graduate students invited to deliver papers at meetings of scholarly organizations.  To be eligible, students must hold the degree of M.Phil. and must not have exceeded their seventh year of study in the Graduate School .  To apply for this fund, students must write a letter to the Department Chair asking for reimbursement for their travel-related expenses.  A copy of the conference invitation must accompany the request.  An original receipt from a car rental, or a plane, train, or bus ticket, that clearly shows the cost of the travel, should be given to the Administrative Assistant for Financial Affairs in the department office after travel has been completed and after approval has been given by the Department Chair.  Copies of both of the above-mentioned documents must also be submitted to the Academic Department Administrator.  Reimbursement for food and lodging is not available.  Students applying for and receiving funds from the department may also be eligible for matching funds (up to $250) from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.  Due to budgetary constraints, a student may only apply for travel funds once per academic year.  Students applying for reimbursement for travel expenses must meet the application deadlines set by the History Department and by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.  Please submit your letters to the Chair by the following deadlines:

                        Summer semester: July 1

                        Fall semester: November 1

                        Spring semester: March 1

Students should contact the Administrative Assistant for Financial Affairs or the Business Manager in the Department of History for more details and specific deadlines.
