The department admits a small number of students (seldom more than one or two each year) to pursue the Master’s Degree on a part-time basis. M.A.-only students must complete the same first-year requirements as those students enrolled in the M.A./M.Phil./Ph.D. program. Course requirements differ substantially for each field of history; a description of these requirements can be found in section 2, above . In most fields, students are required to take six courses for the M.A.: two or three graduate colloquia, one or two semesters of a research seminar, and two other courses (lecture courses, additional colloquia, or other courses outside the department). The introductory colloquium G8910 Introduction to History and Historiography, a required course for first-year Ph.D.-track students, is not required of or automatically open to M.A.-only students, but they may enroll with the instructor’s permission.
Language requirements also differ substantially for each field. All M.A.-only students must pass at least one language exam. In some fields, more than one may be required. Students should consult their advisors for more information on this requirement.
Students in the Part-Time M.A. program are not eligible for financial aid or for teaching appointments.
Students who complete the Part-Time M.A. program and wish to be considered for admission to the Ph.D. program in History must apply through the regular admissions process of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences.
