The Associate Dean is the chief officer for degree and academic programs and international exchange programs. The Associate Dean staffs the Executive Committee of GSAS that has academic oversight of all M.A. and Ph.D. programs.

The Associate Dean for the Ph.D. programs works with the Dean on all aspects of the Ph.D. program, with special emphasis on graduate student teaching.

The Assistant Dean for MA programs administers the Liberal Studies MA and oversees the departmental and multidisciplinary MA programs.

This office interprets and implements policy regarding GSAS fellowships and student financial aid. The staff administers departmental and outside fellowships, calculates financial aid for both incoming and continuing students. The staff supplies information to students and departments on fellowship and financial aid programs from Columbia and outside sources.

This office administers the admissions process, preparing and distributing application materials about the school. It is also responsible for readmission and advanced standing.

Administration and Planning—109 Low Library

This office oversees the personnel of the Graduate School and is responsible for its finances, including the processing of reimbursements. It also provides institutional research and planning support for the school.

 

Office of Minority Affairs and Special Programs—102 Low Library

This office is responsible for recruitment and advisement of students from groups that are historically underrepresented in graduate education. It administers the GSAS merit Fellowships and the Summer Research Program.

 

Dissertation Defense and Deposit—107 Low Library

This office handles applications for the M.Phil degree and schedules the Ph.D. defenses. It receives and processes deposit copies of dissertations. The office also makes the final check of the requirements for the M.Phil and Ph.D degrees, and reviews applications for leaves of absence and withdrawals.

Student Affairs provides non-academic resources to students regarding many aspects of student life, such as housing, health services, and disability services. This office is also responsible for orientation, Ph.D. convocation and commencement, and the daily management of the Graduate Student Lounge. Staff administers the Ph.D. Matching Travel fund, the Interuniversity Doctoral Consortium and the Exchange Scholar Program. The Assistant Dean also advises the Graduate Student Advisory Council (GSAC).

 

 

International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO)

ISSO staff assists international students and scholars with their questions about University policies and practices, regulatory and documentation matters, social and cultural activities, adjustment to a new academic and cultural environment, and personal and family services and needs. The ISSO provides central advisement service to Columbia Schools, faculty, and departments for the evaluation of credentials of students who have studied in another country. Acting on behalf of the Office of the Provost and Dean of Faculties, the ISSO administers the designation of visiting scholars and scientists and provides services supporting and promoting international educational exchange. The ISSO administers immigration services for Columbia University’s international students and faculty, researchers, and visiting scholars. The ISSO offers orientation programs in which members of our international community have the opportunity to meet and receive informational briefings. Orientation sessions are provided throughout the academic year for visiting scholars and faculty. The ISSO also offers an annual series of workshops on international taxation, presented by certified accountants, and on advanced immigration matters, presented by nationally recognized attorneys.
